March Happy Tails
March has been an exciting month at the shelter! With new arrivals, successful adoptions, and impactful community projects, there’s so much to share. Let’s take a look at what we’ve accomplished and what’s coming up in April.
New Arrivals
Li Xi
Just before Tết, two kindhearted tourists rescued Li Xi from harsh conditions, giving her a chance at a better life.
Named after the lucky lì xì envelopes, she’s now beginning a joyful new chapter in a loving home.
Seeker
Seeker was living on a chicken farm in Bình Phước when, after chasing chickens out of hunger, he was beaten and left blind in one eye.
Thankfully, neighbours intervened and rushed him to the vet. Despite his trauma, Seeker remains gentle and loving and looking for his forever home.
Petey
Petey was rescued from a situation where he was at risk of entering the dog meat trade. Now safe, he’s beginning the life every puppy deserves. He is still very young and too small for shelter life, so we are urgently seeking a forever home where he can continue to grow in a safe, caring environment. Calm, well-behaved, and affectionate, he is ready to bond with his new family.
Chilli
Chilli was rescued from a situation where she was confined and chained, a challenging start for such a smart and sensitive breed. Poodles are active, intelligent, and people-oriented dogs, and Chilli has shown herself to be bright, affectionate, and full of energy. She is now ready for a home that can provide the environment she needs to thrive.
Houdini
Houdini came into our care after being rescued from a distressing situation, where he was found tied up in a bag and likely being transported for sale. Now safe with us, he is receiving urgent treatment for liver damage, and we’re committed to helping him recover and find a loving home.
Join the Care Collective
The Care Collective is the community of monthly supporters whose ongoing contributions provide the stability needed to sustain rescue, rehabilitation, and shelter operations at Laws for Paws Vietnam.
Monthly support allows us to plan ahead, maintain consistent standards of care, and provide the long term care our dogs require. Your monthly support directly determines the level of care we can provide.
Our Impact Together
Con Dao Visit 3
Phase 3 of our Con Dao Animal Welfare project is complete!
Thanks to the continued support of our partners Six Senses Con Dao and Animal Doctors International, we delivered vital veterinary care to 17 animals – 9 dogs and 8 cats – through comprehensive health check-ups, preventative treatments, and sterilisation procedures on Con Dao.
During this visit, our team successfully completed 8 sterilisations (6 dogs and 2 cats) and provided 9 check-ups and operative care (6 dogs and 3 cats), addressing the root causes of overpopulation and laying the groundwork for healthier animals and a more sustainable future for the community.
Sustainable Operations
We’re always looking for ways to save where we can so we can put more into caring for our dogs. At our cage-free shelter, we deep clean twice a day, every day, to keep our dogs healthy and happy – but one of our biggest monthly expenses is our water bill.
Thanks to our landlord and some clever Vietnamese reuse ingenuity, we’ve installed our first rainwater tank and roof gutter system to support our daily operations. We’re excited to see it in action this rainy season!
Adoption Spotlights
Rex
-
Rex’s story began back in 2021, when he was rescued from a government building by our long-time supporter and dog trainer at the time, Ali from Dog Walkers in Thao Dien. He was in an awful condition when he was found and was rushed straight to the vet, where he was diagnosed with severe blood parasites (E-Cannis), severe malnutrition, and an extremely serious case of demodex that had caused major fur loss and open wounds across his body.
His recovery was not quick. It took over a year for Rex’s severe skin condition to fully come under control and for his beautiful coat to begin growing back. But throughout it all, he kept going. Step by step, Rex recovered, gained weight, rebuilt his strength, and slowly learned to trust the people around him. Over time, he became a much-loved member of our shelter pack, enjoying his walks with volunteers and leaning in for affection from the people he knew best.
By then, Rex had been with us for years. As a bigger, older Bac Ha mixed breed with a strong personality and a few grumpy old man tendencies, we truly believed Rex would stay with us for the rest of his life. He was never the obvious adoption candidate. He liked things done his way, in his own time, and he was not the kind of dog who would fit easily into just any home. But that never changed how much he mattered to us.
Then, something incredible happened. A kind Vietnamese man came to the shelter looking to adopt. As usual, we introduced him to some of the dogs we thought might be the easiest match. But Rex had other ideas. He walked straight up to him and did his signature “Rex hug,” rubbing himself against the man’s legs in the way only Rex could. The man looked down and simply said, “I’ll take him.” We were shocked.
The next day, we brought Rex for a home visit, and it was immediately clear that this was the life he had been waiting for. Rex’s adopter lived in a large house with a big garden and other larger dogs, giving him the kind of space and environment that suited him perfectly.
Today, Rex is living a life beyond anything we imagined for him. He now spends his days in a beautiful villa with gardens, swimming pools, tennis courts, and all the room he could ever want to explore. Most importantly, he is with a family who understands his quirks, respects his personality, and loves him exactly as he is.
Rex’s story is such an important reminder that adoption is not about finding just any home. It is about finding the right home. Some dogs take longer. Some dogs are overlooked. Some dogs surprise everyone. But every dog has a chance - and Rex is proof of that.
Mr Sprinkes
-
Mr. Sprinkles’ journey began with neglect, but it didn’t stay that way for long.
He was part of a family that did not provide the care, exercise, or attention he needed, and eventually, he ran away. When we were able to track down his previous owners, they made the decision to surrender him to us rather than take him back.
Since joining our pack at the shelter, Mr. Sprinkles quickly showed his true nature. He is a playful, energetic young boy who loves being around people and other pets, always bringing a sense of joy wherever he goes.
Mr. Sprinkles was later adopted by a lovely family with plenty of experience caring for small dogs. He now lives in a warm, multigenerational household where he is surrounded by love and attention.
He especially enjoys his daily motorbike rides to the market with his grandma, proudly sitting up front as they make their way through the streets. He’s become quite well-known among the aunties and grandmas at the market, and spends his days enjoying park outings, family time, and all the little routines that make up a very happy life.
Oreo
-
Oreo’s story began on the streets of Thao Dien, where she was found among five puppies being transported on a motorbike by a homeless man in the pouring rain.
A kind supporter stopped to offer help, initially believing the puppies belonged to the man’s own dogs. After a brief conversation, we arranged to meet him at our vet clinic the following morning. Despite the heavy rain, he returned as promised, bringing not only the puppies but also his two adult dogs, who we were able to sterilize. It turned out that he had found the puppies abandoned in a cardboard box on the street. Despite their difficult start, they were healthy, gentle, and full of potential.
In our care, Oreo grew into a beautiful, confident dog. She thrived in the shelter environment, where she was socialized with other dogs and people, joined in on events, and quickly picked up both leash and toilet training.
Oreo was later adopted by a lovely Vietnamese couple who were preparing to welcome a new baby into their family and were looking for a well-adjusted young dog to grow alongside them. She now lives in District 7, where she enjoys off-leash walks in the park and life as a big sister in her new home. With cats as part of the household, Oreo is never short of companions and has truly found her place in a loving, lively family.
Chip, Dale, Bart, Martha & Lela
-
Chip, Dale, Bart, Martha & Lela’s story began at a construction site, where their mother was trying to care for them in an unsafe environment beside a swimming pool.
With the constant risk of the puppies falling into the water, it was a dangerous place for them to grow up. Laws for Paws Vietnam stepped in just in time to bring them to safety.
Once in our care, the puppies received treatment for mild parasites, began their vaccinations, and were given the opportunity to socialize with both humans and other dogs. With a safe environment and the right start, they quickly grew into happy, healthy, and well-adjusted puppies.
From that difficult beginning, each of them has now found a home of their own.
🐶 Chip
Chip was adopted by a lovely family and now lives with two young human siblings. He’s grown up surrounded by love and attention, and is completely spoilt by his forever family.
🐶 Dale
Dale was adopted by a Vietnamese family who were looking to welcome a furry companion into their home. He has settled in beautifully and become a much-loved part of their family.
🐶 Bart
Bart was adopted by a Vietnamese family who live in a house, giving him plenty of space to grow and explore. With the right balance of freedom and care, he has grown into a wonderful family dog.
🐶 Martha
Martha was adopted by a loving family who truly adore her. She has found the perfect home to continue growing into the amazing dog we always knew she would be.
🐶 Lela (now Thao)
Lela, now named Thao, was adopted by one of our volunteers who immediately fell in love with her. It was clear from the start that she was meant to be part of her family, home, and heart.
