April Happy Tails
The start of Q2 has not slowed down for the shelter! April has been a big month of tiny new arrivals, education, events and impact.
There’s so much to share, so let’s dive in.
New Arrivals
Speedy & Racey
Rescued from a desperate situation, one of the vets from our clinic stepped in immediately to save these two sisters.
Sweet, playful and thriving at the shelter, Speedy and Racey are now looking for their forever home.
Pham
Rescued and brought to us by some kind-hearted people, Pham was covered in ticks and in rough shape.
After a full veterinary assessment, he was given a clean bill of health. He’s now thriving in foster care, and his smart, sweet, and endlessly affectionate personality is shining through.
Carlos
One of our previous adopters found Carlos on the side of the road in a cardboard box, with no food and covered in his own waste, and no sign of the mother.
In need of immediate attention, she brought him home, until next steps could be made. Getting a full bill of health, Carlos is now at the shelter lapping up cuddles and kisses from everyone.
Bouncer
A delivery driver with an unexpected connection to our shelter turned up with a tiny puppy and a story that was hard to say no to. His elderly neighbour had given her to his kids while he was out at work, but with three children at home, a wife running a Com Tam stall on the street, and a full day of deliveries ahead of him, keeping her simply wasn't possible. And returning her to an elderly couple wasn't right either.
Felix
Felix was purchased from a roadside scam with the best intentions. A kind tourist saw the puppy’s poor condition and stepped in to help. Sadly, this is something we encounter far too often. While well-meaning, these actions unintentionally perpetuate the cycle.
Now at the clinic and receiving immediate care for a mild case of distemper, Felix is already showing encouraging signs of progress.
Join the Care Collective
The Care Collective is the community of monthly supporters whose ongoing contributions provide the stability needed to sustain rescue, rehabilitation, and shelter operations at Laws for Paws Vietnam.
Taking in six new puppies over four weeks has meant six first vaccines, six tick and flea, six dewormer, six blood test panels, alongside more extensive treatment for Felix’s distemper.
Monthly support allows us to plan ahead, maintain consistent standards of care, and provide the long term care our dogs require. Your monthly support directly determines the level of care we can provide.
Education in Action
SSIS Lunch & Listen
A huge thank you to the SSIS AWWA team for inviting our Founder, Elizabeth Homfray, to speak at the recent Lunch & Listen event - a student-led program spotlighting inspirational speakers in Vietnam.
Elizabeth shared her journey from working in large-scale interior design projects to founding a rescue shelter. A powerful reminder that impact and purpose don’t always begin with a plan - sometimes they begin with a decision to keep going.
SNA Morning Meet & Greet
This month, our team had a really special morning visiting the 5th graders at SNA, who had organised a bake sale to raise funds for our dogs. Elizabeth stopped by to meet the students, chat about what community service means, and why caring for animals is such a meaningful way to give back. They also spoke about some of our dogs available for adoption.
It was a lovely reminder that kindness starts young, and these students are already showing up for dogs who need them.
Adoption Spotlights
Lena & Nina
-
Lena and Nina came to us the way too many puppies do, found alone without their mother by a kind-hearted dog lover who knew they needed help. Unable to care for them herself, she brought them to our vet clinic, and from that moment they were ours to look after.
The two sisters settled into shelter life together, bringing double the charm and double the mischief. It didn't take long for them to work their magic on the people around them.
Lena was the first to find her person, and she didn't have to look far. One of our own volunteers fell completely head over heels and made it official. Today she lives in District 7 with her devoted dad, a Vietnamese guy who works just around the corner and pops home during the day to take her out. She has beautiful parks on her doorstep, a doting family, and a life that suits her perfectly.
Not long after, Nina found her people too. A lovely teacher couple working at an international school in the city welcomed her into their home and their hearts. Now known as Maggie, she is the undisputed centre of their world and absolutely living her best life.
Two sisters, rescued together, thriving apart. We couldn't be happier for them both.
Mowgli & Xeo
-
It started with a chance encounter on a rainy Thao Dien night. One of our supporters spotted a homeless man navigating his motorbike with five tiny puppies, along with his own two dogs. She stopped to help, and through a little miscommunication, initially thought the puppies belonged to his dogs. With darkness and rain making it impossible to do much that night, we asked him if he could bring them to our vet clinic the following morning at 9:00 a.m.
He showed up. In the pouring rain, he kept his word and arrived right on time with all five pups and his two dogs. We were able to sterilize his dogs while we were at it. As it turned out, the puppies weren't his dogs' at all. He had found them dumped on the street, abandoned in a cardboard box. Despite their rough start, they were in surprisingly good health, beautifully natured, and had the telltale ridges of Ridgebacks.
Mowgli blossomed at the shelter into a strong, happy, and confident pup. He had a natural warmth with people, forming easy bonds with our volunteers, both adults and student helpers alike. Walks were his favourite part of the day, and he made sure everyone knew it.
When the right family came along, it was immediately clear they were made for each other. An active, exercise-loving couple with a spacious home, they matched Mowgli's boundless energy perfectly. Today, he is absolutely thriving, getting all the adventure, love, and space a dog could dream of.
-
It takes courage to step in when it matters. When one of our previous adopters spotted a man abandoning four tiny puppies under a bridge between District 4 and District 7, he didn't walk away. He approached, asked what was happening, and when the man admitted he simply didn't want them anymore, our supporter didn't hesitate. He took all four puppies on the spot and cared for them at home for three days while we prepared space at the shelter.
Xeo and her siblings arrived at the shelter and never looked back. She blossomed into a beautiful, confident, and joyful pup who thrived alongside our volunteers and her fellow shelter dogs. It didn't take long for her to steal hearts.
One of those hearts belonged to a previous adopter of ours who had since moved to the UK. Looking to grow her pack, she saw Xeo and that was that. We worked to prepare Xeo for the journey ahead, and soon she was on her way to a new life in the English countryside. Today she is absolutely thriving, running through open fields, going on horse rides with her mum, and living among her fur siblings. She found her perfect pack, just on the other side of the world.
Bob
-
On a busy road in Thu Duc, a kind man noticed a small puppy darting through traffic, desperate to find safety. He pulled over, and Bob ran straight to him without a second thought. With no owners to be found, the man searched for help and found Laws for Paws Vietnam. We were thrilled to welcome him in.
Bob slotted right into shelter life, joining our pack of puppies and quickly becoming everyone's favourite nap companion. Sweet, social, and endlessly friendly, he had a particular soft spot for our student volunteers and was never far from a warm lap. It was clear from the start that Bob was a smart, loving little guy just waiting for the right family to find him.
That family turned out to be a wonderful Vietnamese family already living in Atlanta, Georgia. Experienced Phu Quoc Ridgeback owners and previous adopters of ours, they knew Bob would be the perfect addition to their home. They waited patiently while he completed his final vaccinations and sterilization before making the journey across the world.
Now Bob and his shelter brother Caspy enjoy wide open spaces and beach visits together, exactly the life two Phu Quoc Ridgebacks deserve. We are beyond thrilled to see another one of our boys thriving, surrounded by all the love, space, and care he could ever need. A heartfelt thank you to their family for their patience, their kindness, and for giving them both the best life imaginable.
Critical Care Fund
Case #002 Closed - Nelly
Nelly was rescued while severely pregnant and in a life-threatening condition. She required emergency intervention to deliver her puppies and survive serious post-birth complications.
Thanks to your support, Case #002 is officially closed.
Nelly continues to receive ongoing care funded by the Critical Care Fund and is scheduled for sterilisation in mid-May. Read her full story in the case archives here.
We are currently assessing our next case. Stay tuned for more details.
