Cleo had carved out a pretty good life for herself in a residential compound in District 9. The kind of life only a clever, independent dog could manage. The residents there took to her immediately, leaving food out and sometimes letting her wander into their gardens for a nap in the shade. She appreciated the warmth, but on her own terms. Moving in permanently was never part of her plan.

Then came the announcement. A loudspeaker crackled from an electricity pole, the old Ward police communication system that still runs through these neighbourhoods, warning residents that the government would be coming through to collect street dogs, including those inside the compound. The residents who had been quietly looking out for Cleo didn't hesitate. They contacted us, managed to catch her, and brought her straight to our shelter.

Because Cleo had always lived alongside people, her transition to shelter life was faster than most. After a full health check and spay at our clinic, she settled in beautifully. She has taken to leash training well, is friendly with everyone she meets, and has shown us that beneath that independent exterior is a dog who genuinely loves being around people, on her own terms and at her own pace.
